How To

How to Survive a Home Invasion

Home invasion is terrifying, especially when you have kids. We didn't expect to live through home invasion when we started our journey with installing a home security system. Here are the lessons we have learned thus far.

  1. Do Not Allow Your Children to See The Attackers. Two men entered our home while our children were asleep upstairs. We took them downstairs until they arrived at the police station. They didn't harm our kids, but it was enough to traumatize them.
  2. Lock up all valuables. We keep valuables locked up in a safe in our bedroom. Even if someone is able to break into the house they won't have access.
  3. Keep an eye out on burglars. We live in a neighborhood that has a lot of burglaries. We are always on the lookout for suspicious cars and people.
  4. Always have a backup plan. Our family will be financially protected in case anything happens. We also have a plan to leave the country if necessary.
  5. Prepare. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you must defend your life, you must be prepared. Be prepared with food, water, as well as other supplies.
  6. Call 911 First. Call 911 immediately if you suspect that someone has broken into the house. It's better to call the authorities than to wait for them to break down your door.
  7. Use common sense. Do not let anyone enter your home if you don't feel at home. Do not invite strangers.
  8. You can get help from nearby neighbors and people who live in the same area. Call neighbors or friends if you feel unsafe. They can help you watch your back while you call the police.
  9. Keep Calm and Do What Police Officers Tell You To. Keep calm and do as the officers direct. Don't run away or resist arrest.
  10. Take photos of all evidence. Photograph any evidence that is found during an investigation. This includes blood samples and fingerprints.
  11. Local Law Enforcement Should Be contacted. File a report with law enforcement even if no one was injured. This could help prevent you from being convicted of future crimes.
  12. Call the Insurance Company immediately. Call your insurance company immediately. Inform your insurance company about the events and request an adjuster to visit to assess the damage.
  13. You must get rid of personal belongings. Be sure to get rid of personal belongings before you leave. Don't wear expensive jewelry. Take it off and put it away.
  14. Take Care of Yourself. Take care of yourself. Make sure you empty the trash, clean up any broken glass, and lock all doors.
  15. Talk about What happened. Talk about what happened. You never know who could use this information against your later.
