How to Survive a Home Invasion

Home invasion is a scary thought, especially when there are kids involved. We didn't expect to live through home invasion when we started our journey with installing a home security system. Here are the lessons we have learned thus far.

  1. Don't Let Your Kids See The Attackers. Two men broke into our home upstairs while our kids were sleeping. We kept them downstairs until the police arrived. They didn't harm our kids, but it was enough to traumatize them.
  2. Lock Up All Valuables. The safe is located in our bedroom. We keep all valuables locked up. Even if someone is able to break into the house they won't have access.
  3. Keep an eye on Burglars. Our neighborhood has many burglaries. We always keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles and people.
  4. Always have a backup plan. If something happens, our family will be taken over financially. We also have a plan to leave the country if necessary.
  5. Be prepared. If you are ever in a situation where your life is at stake, it is important to be prepared. You should always have water and food on hand.
  6. Call 911 First. If you find out that someone has broken into your home, call 911 immediately. It's safer to call the authorities immediately than to wait for them at your door.
  7. Use common sense. Don't let anyone inside who doesn't belong there. Also, don't invite strangers to come over.
  8. Get Help From Neighbors Or Other People In The Area. Call neighbors or friends if you feel unsafe. They will be able to watch your back and call the police.
  9. Keep your cool and do as instructed by officers. Be calm and do what officers tell you to. Do not run or resist arrest.
  10. Photograph Any Evidence. Photograph any evidence that is found during an investigation. This includes blood samples and fingerprints.
  11. Local Law Enforcement Can Be Reported. File a report with law enforcement even if no one was injured. This will help to prevent future crimes.
  12. Contact the Insurance Company Immediately. Call your insurance company immediately. You can tell them all about what happened and they will send an adjuster out to assess the damage.
  13. Remove Personal Belongings. Be sure to get rid of personal belongings before you leave. If you're wearing expensive jewelry, take it off and put it somewhere safe.
  14. Clean Up After Yourself. Take care of yourself. Make sure you empty the trash, clean up any broken glass, and lock all doors.
